I was able to catch a showing of Black Swan with my girlfriend recently. I must say, Aronofsky did a stellar job blending reality and lies with his signature direction. From big hits like The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke to the depressing truth behind Requiem For A Dream, Aronofsky hits it home with Black Swan and its intricate storytelling. Directing aside, the following poster teasers take classic font choices and juxtaposes it with ideas of drama and tragedy through colors, shapes and illustration. The artwork seen here did exactly what it needed to do…tease.

A man who worked 18 years of his life from a very humble position within a retail shop and graduated to the corporate side of the same company. His name, Todd Barket, the sole proprietor of UnionMade in San Francisco. A quaint shop on the corner of 18th and Sanchez. The first time I set step into his shop, I felt a certain warmth - a welcoming warmth that kept me fascinated yet grounded. The brands he carried, the heritage decor, the mid afternoon cup of coffee jazz in the background. The setting felt natural and comfortable. The experience was almost nostalgic to an old American outfitter but set in its modern day. Todd was always ready to assist with any questions and background about any of the brands. In short, this man is not only a humble shop owner but to me, a fashion educator.

Giving back to the city where Levi's is headquartered, Levi's is debuting Levi's Workshops in San Francisco's Mission District today (July 1st) for printmaking and will be followed by the same modeled events hosted in New York later in September for photography.
These workshops create a working environment for local artists and designers to create their own screen printed artwork and to be able to share with the community their artistic voice.

Founded Japan in 1947 by K.K. Tsunemi, Edwin labels itself as high quality selvage denim. The company is now owned by his son. As a collaboration project between British casual menswear brand Folk, the Armstrong is a mid-cut boot that features a leather upper, waxed chukka lacing system, white rubber sole and a small Edwin branding flag to finish. In the Alaric carries a suede upper, wax laces, contrasting stitching as well as a denim leather strip detailing the back of the heel. Get yours here.

Growing up in the Bay was definitely an experience that can shape an individual. Our communities are unique in it's own right. Even traveling fifteen minutes North or South of Oakland places you in Berkeley or San Leandro and will differentiate visual and atmospheric stimulation. All of our landmarks, small business owners and communities place intrinsic value to the area code we claim as 510.

CoolHunting, one of my daily reads, traveled to the Bay and documented our residents and the quaint side of Oakland. This was a quality job and props to the folks on production down to the interviewees.

Band of Outsiders dropped the latest collection called No Bunk! No Junk!. The collection will be distributed exclusively at six Barney locations. Scott Sternberg, the LA based Band of Outsiders designer states that his newest collection targets to ‘tap into Barney’s heritage’ which encapsulates global design. The entire collection is restricted to black and white simple colorways. The line includes staple items including a black corduroy suit, leather jacket and plaid shirt among others.

We Were Once a Fairytale by Spike Jonze. See Kanye act unruly once again.
What was originally meant to be the video for Kanye West’s “See You in My Nightmares”, eventually transformed into the 14 minute short film directed by Oscar nominated director Spike Jonze. Spike Jonze, who’s directed classics such as Being John Malkovich, Adaptation and the upcoming Where The Wild Things Are has previously worked with West on the video for “Flashing Lights”. We Were Once a Fairytale will release on September 8th via iTunes and feature a cameo from skateboarder/blogger/Kanye’s stylist Ibn Jasper.

VIVA LA LeBRON VII!

Last week, Nike teamed up with 2009 NBA MVP LeBron James for a LIVE Air Max LeBron VII webcast. Saturday Night Live's comedian Kenan Thompson hosted the unveiling of the sneaker at Akron, Ohio’s Ed Davis Community Center where LeBron balled as a kid. With the all the hype going on about Nike's first ever 360 air bag for a basketball shoe, I was left in all awe when I received a pair in the mail.
I just got back home after a long week to find a nice package from Nike. Kyle Yamaguchi from the Footwear Development Department shot over a limited release of the new LeBron VII's in the white and green colorway. The technology and materials used, combined with a slick silhouette and the comfortability antes up to gives the Lebron VII's the deserved hype. Adidas SLVR debuted yet another sub brand accompanying the famed positioned Y-3 and the classic Originals. Below are some kicks from the 2009 - 2010 FW collection. The clean and streamlined silhouettes pays tribute to Y-3 but minimizes the heavy branding of the Trefoil logo replacing it with minimal use of the three stripes. Meir Lobaton + Kristjan Donaldson recently shared their design for a 36 story residential tower in Mexico City, Mexico. The project addressed the balance between the desire of living in a single-family residence with the cost of the land.

Interesting architecture but a few non-selling points here. The rotating floor plan offsets room for the foliage to grow, though I do not see much growing room and this might possibly be a nosy neighbors dream come true. Beautiful concept between space and open skies. I don't mind a walk through but the flaws need to be addressed.

ABE QUINTIN STOVE PIPE

I had the recent pleasure to work with Nick S. on the 21st-Century Abe Project. DsgnRehb helped design the press kit for the Abe Stove Pipe. The family over at Quintin produced this quality commemorative hat in homage of Licoln's 200th birthday. A online celebration of his life by looking at his heritage through 21st-century eyes was also in place.

This Stove Pipe Hat includes a wool outer, and satin lining with a letter written to Gideon Welles by Lincoln on the inside which reproduces a message sent on March 9, 1861 which many consider the signal for the coming start of the Civil War. Lincoln used to store notes in his hat like cue cards. Not something I can rock on the daily, but it's limited in production and a tip of the cap (no pun intended) to the throwback collectors.

I've been pretty busy recently with the daily hustle and building with the folks over at Quintin. Peep the new project with Vic Llyod, the man behind LDRS in Chicago. This 5 panel fitted was manufactured to complement the new Yeezy colorway. The cap features a black crown with the Y print, a neon pink underbill with a glow in the dark sandwich brim. Only 50 were produced and these will ONLY be available at LDRS Wicker Park address.

Be on the ook for some real heat coming from these guys as well as the DSGN.REHB fitteds!

Hype Williams directed the new video for "Amazing" off Kanye's 808 LP. A helicopter was rented and raw footage was captured on location in Hawaii. Williams gave the shoot a interesting application - landscapes were in shot and outputted in full screen while the remaining footage was given a double cinema black bar treatment. Amazing scenic shots nonetheless...peep.

Barneys as been a topic in my recent posts. This post concerns the childhood comic dual - two spies that represent the absent and presence of color in life. This is honestly a very clever tangible production as Barney’s New York brings to life this display for fashion designer Azzedine Alaia as he re-purposes two childhood icons; the black and white spies from Mad’s long-running comic, Spy vs. Spy. Way to resurrect an emotional childhood!

"Don't call it a comeback"...Action sports outfitter, Etnies is re-creating the skateboarding classic shoe the Rap. Coming from the first skateboarder-owned shoe company, the Etnies Rap was different than anything else on the market in the 90's. Etnies is bringing back the Rap model in 2009 with the addition of several technical upgrades including vulcanized soles along side mid/low cut models.
I was never a real big pure skate shoe fan though I had a few pairs to stunt. I do however, appreciate the care and ownership to bring a classic back in a sea of competitors owning a over saturated market. She definitely got paid royally for endorsing Hardee's flavors...as paid as Common when he endorsed Microsoft's Softwear.
